History Day..............

History Day again... Is it just me or are the weeks getting shorter???

1997, Princess Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris. The world came to a stop for her funeral and the world's heart broke for her sons. Whatever else she was, Diana, I think, was the first royal in maybe forever to manage to raise two sons who are real people.

My daughter and I were in Paris a few years ago and people are still leaving flowers at the entrance to that tunnel.

In other news....

1852, the US Congress passed legislation creating the first pre-stamped envelopes.

1888, Mary Ann Nichols, the first victim of Jack the Ripper, is found mutilated in Buck's Row in the East End.

1940, Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh were married.

1942, Superman made his first flight...on radio.

1950, Gil Hodges of the Brooklyn Dodgers hit FOUR HOME RUNS in a single game against the Boston Braves.

1959, Sandy Koufax, of the LA Dogers, set a National League record for striking out 18 batters.

1963, Walter Cronkite started showing up in living rooms as anchor of the CBS Evening News.

1964, California became the most populated state in the country. (Feels like it still is. Take a look at our pitiful freeways!!)

1987, the largest pre-order of albums in the history of CBS Records--2.25 MILLION copies of Michael Jackson's album BAD were shipped to record stores.

So, that's what I found! What've you guys got??

History Day......

History Day is here....Now, I'm guessing this photo on the left wasn't actually taken on somebody's phone....but it's probably pretty much what it looked like on this day in 0079 at lunchtime in Pompeii. When Mt. Vesuvius erupted around noon, it buried Pompeii under 13 feet of ash. Vesuvius is still considered an active volcano

And in other news....

1456, the printing of the Guttenberg bible was completed

1891, Thomas Edison applied for a movie camera patent

1939, the leader of Murder, Incorporated turned himself into Walter Winchell, a journalist, who in turn, handed him over to the FBI

1969, Arlo Guthrie's Alice's Restaurant premiered

1979, BB King celebrated 30 years in the music business

1985, Huey Lewis and the News reached Number 1 on Billboard with The Power of Love....and I'm guessing you're singing it right now.

1991, The Soviet Union began to break apart--Mikhail Gorbechev resigned as head of the Communist Party

1992, one of the worst disasters in US history: Hurricane Andrew crashed into southern Florida--Andrew killed at least 20 people and caused billions in damage.

1995, Microsoft rolled out Windows 95.........(how did they go from THAT to Vista???)

what have you guys got?????

Auction!!!

You know, bad stuff happens to everyone now and then. I firmly believe it's what you do when bad stuff hits that defines you.

Well, my friend's brother in law is just a kid--in his 20's--and he's been hit hard over and over again by an insidious form of cancer that gets back up every time Matt slaps it down.

But you know what?? MATT DOESN'T QUIT. And because of that, he's going to win.

But here's the deal....Matt's family has put together an awesome basket of amazing books, autographed by the authors and they're auctioning it off to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Did I mention that Matt comes by his guts naturally? His family is right there with him, fighting in the trenches.

So here's a link. Go see my friend's page--check out the great books signed by some really terrific authors--then go make a bid. In this auction....everybody wins.

And even if you don't make a bid...take a second to say a prayer for Matt... Even fighters need all the help they can get.............

History Day..........

So, here we are on History Day again...and I know what you're thinking. Okay sure, other, more important things happened on this day...But let's hear it for the fun factor, shall we???

On this day in 1933, the now famous Mickey Mouse watch was introduced. It sold for $2.75 and one of those original watches today is worth hundreds.

In other news....

1492, Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue...The Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria left Spain just before sunrise looking for a water passage to Cathay--they never did find it.

1880, The American Canoe Association was formed at Lake George, New York. (Canoes have associations???)

1933, with Lefty Grove pitching, the Philadelphia Athletics beat the New York Yankees, shattering their winning streak of 308 games

1949, the NBA was formed.......(Have I mentioned how much I don't like basketball??)

1958, James Robert Sordelet of Fort Wayne, In., became the first person to re-enlist in the Navy while UNDER the North Pole! He did so while serving on the USS Nautilus as it crossed under the Arctic ice.

1963, College football All Stars beat the Green Bay Packers 20-17 (I'm guessing there were a lot of embarrassed faces)

1963, the Beatles made their final appearance at the Cavern Club in Liverpool.

1963, the Beach Boys SURFER GIRL was released. (Jeez, '63 was a busy year!)

1963, Allan Sherman's hit HELLO MUDDAH, HELLO FADDAH was released (and now it's in my head!!)

1971, Paul McCartney formed the band Wings....(Never should have had Linda singing...just my opinion)

1985, Mail service returned to Paradise Lakes, FL--a nudist colony--after residents promised to either wear clothes or stay out of sight when the mailperson was expected....(How thoughtful!)

Okay you guys..........what've you got??
